A film by Emily Driscoll. SHELLSHOCKED follows efforts to prevent the extinction of wild oyster reefs, which keep our oceans healthy by filtering water and engineering ecosystems. Today, because of overfishing and pollution, wild oyster reefs have been declared “the most severely impacted marine habitat on Earth” and are “functionally extinct.” Now scientists, government officials, artists and environmentalists are fighting to bring oysters back to the former oyster capital of the world – New York Harbor.
Presentation: Dr. Wiley Evans – Ocean Acidification
After the film, Dr. Wiley Evans will give us insight into the issue of ocean acidification and its impact on marine ecosystems. Wiley is a research associate for the Carbon Program at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and for the Ocean Acidification Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His research is aimed at understanding the carbon cycle within coastal ocean and estuary settings.
