VIU Deep Bay by the Numbers, an 18 Month Report

It has always been our intention to produce an annual report at the end of every fiscal year. Mostly by the time the end of the year comes down we have been too busy moving forward to reflect on the year past and this goal has slipped by. The Field Station (DBMFS) is an experiment in itself, a reflection of the goal of VIU of to be the University of Coastal Communities, combining research, education, community engagement, extension, and sustainability in an off-campus facility with a goal of being financially self-sufficient.   The following report illustrates a variety of numbers relating to the last 18 months from April 1st, 2014 through to September 30, 2015 and is an excerpt from a larger report that was prepared for internal university use.  Read the rest of this entry »

Tea by the Sea

Join us for high tea including a delicious selection of sandwiches, pastries and other goodies prepared our chef. Tea by the Sea is served every Tuesday throughout spring and summer and on select Tuesdays during the fall and winter.

Upcoming Tea by the Sea dates: Sept. 29th, Oct 20 (Special Harvest Tea), Nov. 17, Dec. 8 (Special Christmas Tea), Dec. 15 (Special Christmas Tea)

Tea includes admission to the Station. Enjoy stunning views of Baynes Sound, and tour the Station to learn about marine science through colourful exhibits, large public aquaria and touch tanks teeming with marine life collected from BC waters.

Proceeds from Tea by the Sea benefit Deep Bay Marine Field Station’s education programs.

Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra -August 22nd

The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra will finish off our music series, performing a delightful mix of music while guests enjoy breathtaking views of Baynes Sound and feast on a sumptuous appetizer buffet, prepared by resident Red Seal chef Lila Ruzicka. Drop-In Tour & Lunch Every Thursday at the Station June 18 – August 27

Looking for something fun to do this summer? We have Drop-In Tours every Thursday from 11am – 12pm during the summer. Come learn about the research we are doing here, experience the touch tanks, and learn about our LEED Platinum Certified building.

$10 per person. No Reservation Required

Foraging for Wild Edibles June 13th & 17th


The Earth and Moon align to give some of the year’s lowest tides, uncovering a variety of edible treasures. Brian Kingzett, Manager of the Vancouver Island University Deep Bay Marine Field Station, will lead small groups on a foraging excursion, sampling salty-sweet ocean delicacies, Pacific Oysters and Manila Clams direct from their shells on the shellfish research farm of the University. The ritual of sharing, dating back to Vancouver Island’s earliest ancestors, as clearly denoted in prehistoric shellfish middens, is all part of the fun. Foragers will learn about First Nations’ use of shellfish, Vancouver Island’s marine ecology, species identification and which island wines complement the organic ocean treats. Brian will discuss where and how to forage for shellfish locally and how to make sure that your shellfish is safe to eat. Afterwards, participants will retire to the Field Station for a short cooking lesson/ demonstration and a shellfish themed meal showcasing the products of local shellfish farms and paired with Vancouver Island wines all prepared by the Field Station’s Chef’s in residence. So, forget cutlery! Learn how an oyster can be enjoyed au natural!
